Feb 16, 2026By Rohan Mehta

Kuch sapne hote hain jo roads pe chalte hain. Aur agar aap India mein ho, toh woh sapna ek hi naam lena ka hai — Delhi to Leh Ladakh bike trip. Yeh sirf ek road trip nahi — yeh ek rite of passage hai every serious Indian adventurer ke liye. Bharti mountains, Himalayan passes, ancient monasteries, frozen lakes — aur upar se, roads so high that clouds drift below you. Manmauji Trip ke saath, yeh dream becomes your reality.
The Classic Delhi to Leh Route
The most popular route is via Manali Highway (NH3/NH21), open from mid-June to mid-October. The full route from Delhi is approximately 1,050 km and typically takes 7–10 days on bike (including acclimatisation days).
Route Map: Delhi → Manali → Leh
- Delhi → Chandigarh (250 km): Day 1 — flat highway, warm-up ride.
- Chandigarh → Manali (310 km): Day 2 — Shimla bypass route, mountain roads begin.
- Manali (Rest/Acclimatisation): Day 3 — MUST spend 1 day for altitude adjustment at 2,050 m.
- Manali → Jispa (110 km): Day 4 — Rohtang Pass (3,978 m), Gramphu, Keylong.
- Jispa → Sarchu (70 km): Day 5 — Baralacha La (4,890 m). Overnight camping at Sarchu (4,253 m).
- Sarchu → Leh (250 km): Day 6 — Nakee La, Lachalung La, Tanglang La (5,328 m — one of world's highest motorable roads). Arrive Leh!
- Leh (Rest days): Days 7–8 — acclimatisation, city sightseeing, Shanti Stupa, Leh Palace.
- Nubra Valley side trip: Khardung La (5,359 m), Diskit Monastery, Hunder sand dunes, Bactrian camels.
- Pangong Lake excursion: The famous blue lake from 3 Idiots — it's real and it's breathtaking.
Best Time for the Leh Ladakh Bike Trip
The Manali–Leh highway is open only from mid-June to mid-October due to heavy snow at high altitude passes. July–August is peak season — roads are open, weather is relatively stable, and the landscape is in full bloom. September–early October is quieter with crisp weather and spectacular colours — a personal favourite of our guides.
Permits Required for Ladakh
- Inner Line Permit (ILP): Required for Indian citizens to visit restricted areas like Nubra Valley, Pangong Lake, and Tso Moriri. Available online or at Leh DC office. Manmauji handles this for all group riders.
- Protected Area Permit: Required for foreign nationals. Needs advance arrangement.
- Rohtang Pass Permit: Required for all vehicles crossing Rohtang — limited daily permits. We book these in advance.
Bike Options for the Trip
- Royal Enfield Himalayan (411cc): Built exactly for this — reliable, sturdy, and purpose-designed for mountain terrain. Our top recommendation.
- Royal Enfield Classic 350/500: A classic choice — heavier but iconic. Great for experienced riders.
- KTM Duke/Adventure series: More powerful for experienced riders who want sporty performance.
Manmauji Trip offers both bring-your-own-bike tours and rental bike packages (Royal Enfield Himalayan available on rent). We also organise a support vehicle that carries luggage, carries spare parts, and is there if any rider needs to rest their bike for a day.
Health and Safety for High-Altitude Riding
- Acclimatise properly — spend 2 nights at Manali and 1–2 nights at Sarchu before ascending to Leh.
- Carry Diamox (acetazolamide) for altitude sickness — consult your doctor before the trip.
- Stay hydrated — drink 4+ litres of water daily at altitude.
- Avoid alcohol at altitude — it worsens AMS (Acute Mountain Sickness).
- Ride slowly — altitude means engine performance drops; don't push bike or body.
- Full riding gear mandatory — helmet, riding jacket, gloves, boots. No compromise.
