Spiti Valley Tour Package from Delhi: Into the Cold Desert

Jul 05, 2025By Priya Sharma

Ek jagah hai India mein jahan dharti aur aasman ke beech sirf aap hote ho — aur khaamoshi. Koi signal nahi, koi social media nahi, koi rush nahi — sirf barren Himalayan landscapes stretching to infinity, ancient Buddhist monasteries clinging to clifftops, a river the colour of jade, and a sky so clear at night that the Milky Way feels close enough to touch. Yeh hai Spiti Valley — Himachal Pradesh ka sabse remote, sabse raw, aur sabse unforgettable corner. Aur Manmauji Trip ke saath, yeh dream trip Delhi se possible hai.

What Makes Spiti Valley Special?

Spiti is not for everyone — and that's precisely why it's so special for those who go. Located at an average altitude of 3,800–4,500 m, sandwiched between Lahaul (Himachal) and Ladakh, Spiti is a trans-Himalayan cold desert that receives barely 170 mm of rain annually. The landscape — tawny mountains, wind-carved ridges, apple-green rivers, and sudden splashes of colour from monastery prayer flags — is utterly alien and utterly beautiful.

  • Some of the world's most ancient Buddhist monasteries (Tabo Monastery is 1,024 years old)
  • Chandratal — the Moon Lake at 4,350 m, one of India's most stunning high-altitude lakes
  • Fossil sites — marine fossils at Langza village prove this was once a seabed (410 million years ago!)
  • India's highest post office at Hikkim (4,400 m) — write a postcard from the top of the world
  • India's highest petrol pump at Kaza
  • The friendliest and most humble people you'll meet anywhere in India

Top Places to Visit in Spiti Valley

Key (Ki) Monastery

Spiti's most iconic monastery — perched dramatically on a hilltop at 4,166 m, overlooking the Spiti River and the entire valley. Founded in the 11th century, Key houses over 300 monks and has a fantastic collection of Buddhist scriptures, murals, and thangkas. The sunrise view from Key Monastery is one of the most photographed images in all of Himachal Pradesh — a jagged, multi-storied monastery against snow peaks and a blazing orange sky.

Tabo Monastery

Called the 'Ajanta of the Himalayas' — Tabo Monastery (founded 996 CE) has some of the finest surviving Buddhist art in the world. The mud-brick complex contains temples with 1,000-year-old murals, clay sculptures, and thangkas of extraordinary detail. A UNESCO tentative World Heritage Site. The Dalai Lama has expressed his wish to retire here. Deeply serene and historically overwhelming.

Chandratal Lake

The crown jewel of Spiti — a crescent-shaped glacial lake at 4,350 m, surrounded by barren mountains and moraine. The water colour shifts through shades of turquoise, blue, and emerald depending on the light and time of day. A short 5 km trek from the base camp (tent or vehicle approach from Battal). Camping overnight at Chandratal — under a blanket of stars at 14,000 feet — is an experience that redefines what silence means.

Dhankar Monastery

Dramatically perched on a 1,000-metre cliff above the confluence of the Spiti and Pin rivers — Dhankar looks like it was placed there by divine hands. Hike further up to Dhankar Lake (1.5 hrs) for even more spectacular views. The monastery has beautiful ancient murals and is still active with resident monks.

Langza Village and Pin Valley

Langza is a tiny village at 4,400 m with a giant Buddha statue overlooking the valley. The fossil hunt here — marine fossils visible in rocks all around — is something children especially love. Pin Valley National Park (accessible from Kaza) is home to snow leopards, ibex, and the Pin Valley Glacier trek.

Hikkim — India's Highest Post Office

At 4,400 m — Hikkim has India's (and one of the world's) highest post offices. Send yourself a postcard from here — it actually gets delivered, aur yeh ek amazing memory hai!

Important Things to Know Before Going to Spiti

  • Accessibility: Open June–October via Shimla route and Manali-Rohtang route. The Rohtang side opens later (mid-June) and closes earlier with snow.
  • No ATMs in most of Spiti: Carry sufficient cash from Shimla or Manali. Kaza has a single ATM but it frequently runs out of cash.
  • Limited mobile signal: BSNL works in some spots. Other networks — mostly no signal. Embrace it!
  • Altitude acclimatisation: Must acclimatise at Nako or Tabo for a day before going higher. AMS is a real risk.
  • Permits: No special permit needed for Indian nationals currently. Foreign nationals need to check current Inner Line Permit requirements.
  • Fuel: Fill up at Kaza — it's the last reliable fuel point if going toward Chandratal.

"Spiti Valley change kar deti hai insaan ko. Woh raat Chandratal pe — Milky Way itna saaf tha ki lagta tha haath se chhu lu. Manmauji Trip ne poora circuit perfectly arrange kiya, including the Chandratal camp stay which was incredible. This trip is my life's best decision." — Vikram, Delhi
