About Jim Corbett National Park

Established in 1936 as Hailey National Park (later renamed after famous naturalist and author Jim Corbett), the park covers 1,318 sq km in Nainital district, Uttarakhand. It's divided into 5 main safari zones:

  • Dhikala Zone: The jewel of Corbett — the largest and most diverse zone, with the famous Dhikala Forest Rest House and grasslands (chaurs) teeming with wildlife. Overnight stay available.
  • Bijrani Zone: Most popular day zone — high tiger sighting probability, accessible from Ramnagar.
  • Jhirna Zone: Open year-round (even during monsoon). Good for leopard sightings.
  • Garjia Zone: Near the famous Garjia Devi Temple — good for birdwatching and elephant sightings.
  • Durga Devi Zone: Excellent for birdwatching — over 600 species recorded in Corbett.

Wildlife in Jim Corbett

  • Tigers: About 250–280 Royal Bengal Tigers. Sighting is not guaranteed but the park has excellent density.
  • Elephants: Over 600 Asian Elephants — sightings are very common, especially in Dhikala.
  • Leopards: More numerous than tigers — often spotted in rocky terrain and near water bodies.
  • Gharials and Mugger Crocodiles: Ramganga River is prime territory.
  • Deer: Spotted deer, sambar, barking deer — in huge numbers, especially in grasslands.
  • Birds: 600+ species including Great Hornbill, Crested Serpent Eagle, Fishing Eagle, Pied Kingfisher.
